A category plan is a tactical and operational document that translates a category strategy into a specific, time-bound roadmap. An effective plan should provide a list of projects for the short-term (1 year) and long-term (3-5 years).
It should include spend breakdown, savings target, sourcing pipeline, contract expiry calendar and resource allocation. It is used to align with business stakeholders, provide visibility into project pipeline, and minimize surprises and last-minute requests during the year. Is is also used to balance workload amongst the team.
